AI solutions for lawyers are not all the same!
We have observed a certain level of confusion in the market when it comes to artificial intelligence solutions for lawyers. From the public discussion, one might assume that all such solutions are broadly comparable—but this is certainly not the case.
We have therefore compiled a list of questions that we believe lawyers should keep in mind when evaluating different solutions:
Nature of the solution
Does the solution deliver comprehensive answers on a given topic based on specified sources (like ChatGPT), or is it more akin to a search engine that provides a summary of sources (like Google)?
Quality
Does the solution apply sound legal methodology? Does it rely on and reference all relevant sources of law? Are the references accurate, or are they in some cases fabricated? Are correct legal conclusions drawn from the cited sources? How easy is it to verify the arguments presented? Is it possible to engage in meaningful dialogue with the solution about its responses?
Sources of law
Which sources does the solution have access to? Are answers retrieved from the internet, or are they based exclusively on data contained in a closed database?
Legal analysis
Is the solution highly definitive in its answers, or does it make you aware of other legally plausible outcomes?
Quality assurance
Does the solution evaluate its own analyses? Does it flag potential weaknesses in its responses (which may, for example, call for further questions and/or additional research)?
Language
Are the solution’s responses written in high-quality Icelandic? Can you ask questions and/or request answers in other languages? Is it possible to use the text produced by the solution without extensive editing?
User experience
Is the solution accessible and easy to use? Can you use it in the working environment of your choice?
Security
Is the solution and/or its underlying language models trained on the information you provide? Where and how is your data stored? Have your security experts verified the security of the solution?
Pricing
How is the solution priced compared to other offerings? Does it deliver greater value than competing solutions (e.g. by saving more time and/or producing better outcomes)?
When testing different AI solutions, we advise lawyers to focus on areas they know extremely well, as this makes it easier to quickly and reliably assess their value—including quality and other distinguishing features.
